Piano By Number started as piano books for special needs children. In fact, the idea of writing Piano Is Easy came to me while teaching a brilliant kid who had Down’s Syndrome. There were no books even remotely useful for this child, and so I created several. That turned into the Piano By Number series that can be used by any child, special or not.
I’ve taught children with every major disability from Down’s to Tourrete's Syndrome. I didn’t seek them out; they simply presented themselves to me in the course of my practice.
Try a simple song on our online piano, all on the white keys:
| 1 1 5 5 | 6 6 5 * | 4 4 3 3 | 2 2 1 * |
| 5 5 4 4 | 3 3 2 * | 5 5 4 4 | 3 3 2 * |
Special kids don't necessarily respond to conventional piano teaching that only involves reading music. You need to find a musical language that is exactly on their level, and numbers suits this purpose perfectly.
There is no "one-size-fits-all" piano method, particularly with special kids. You have to experiment and find the presentation that unlocks their enthusiasm and interest.
