The Warm Up Game acquaints the child with the physical concept of up and down. For a child who may not know left from right, this is a big step to learn. Without this knowledge, one really cannot proceed further in learning the piano. First, acquaint the child with everyday things that are placed on the left and the right. Which hand do they hold their pencil with? Which side of the house is their garage on if they are facing their house? Start with the familiar and move into the abstract.
From the simple concept of left and right, the piano creates up and down, close and far, black and white, and a whole host of opposites with which the child must be not only familiar, but conversant.
